Mary Helen Courtney, 98, passed away April 6, 2021. She was born and raised in Indianapolis and was quite proud of “her city.” She held a deep faith and cherished her five children and Irish heritage. Mary Helen was a proud graduate of St. Agnes Academy and Butler University and gave back to the education system as a substitute teacher. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, and dear friend to many. She lived her life to the fullest, cherishing so many that were dear to her. She was kind, selfless, generous, and inclusive and had a way of making people feel special and important. She had a positive outlook, wonderful sense of humor, and was grateful for everything she had. She always had something nice to say, even to strangers. Her joy was in making others happy.

She was preceded in death by her husband Robert F. Courtney and survived by her five children: Patricia (Warren William) Cross, Thomas Courtney, Janet (Richard) Hoeping, Anne Courtney (Dr. James Stribling), and Katie (Charles) Mason. Mary Helen was just a lovely woman who made everyone around her happier just by her interest in them. She had such a lovely smile, and was so kind to all. She was my Mother’s first friend when she arrived here from England in 1946. She and her family were ever present in our childhoods making get togethers so much more fun. She was loved by many will be missed by all who had the “luck” to know her! We are so sorry to the Courtney children for their loss. You and yours are in our thoughts and prayers! Love, Lisa

On behalf of the Potter family, please accept our sincere sympathies on the death of Mrs. Courtney. We share great memories of the "old neighborhood" on Van Tassel Drive, where everyone truly knew everyone. Your mom (and dad and entire family) was especially kind to our family when we tragically lost my sister in 1977. Even though your mom and my mom were not "close" friends, your mom was always very attentive to my mom's grief and she was a great listener and shoulder for her to cry on. It's been years since we were neighbors, but it seems like we still are. May God bless and comfort all of you as He welcomes her into His Eternal Kingdom. - David Potter

Patti, Janet, Tom, Anne, and Katie,
My sister Lisa just texted me a copy of your mother's obituary this morning, I am very sorry for your loss, she was a beautiful women and a wonderful human being. Actually, I was just thinking about her, and all of you, yesterday while I was out working in the yard. Specifically I was remembering how Lisa and I would come over to your house after school and hangout until my mother would get off work and plck us up. It was sweet of your mother to put up with us.
I'm sure Lisa was no problem, so I should probably say she was sweet to have put up with me.
