passed away peacefully in her home on Sunday, 12 May 2019.
She was born into this life 28 April 1936 to the late Edward John Kuhn and (Merna) Bernice (Yeoman) Kuhn in Highland Park, Illinois. Myrna now joins them in Heaven along with her older brother John, and her twin brother, Edward.
She is survived by her devoted husband of nearly 60 years, Donald Theodore Nelson (Don), and their five children; Cinthia Bernice Nelson, Maureen Marie Nelson Faul, Daniel Theodore Nelson (Jen), Matthew Donald Nelson (Kelly), and Adam Edward Nelson (Christie).
The most beautiful blessings of Myrna’s legacy are her eleven grandchildren; Benjamin, Timothy, Brie, Ian, Chloe, Hannah, Jared, Ava, Bridget, Luke and Fletcher, all whom she loved immensely and knitted for abundantly!
Myrna attended Immaculate Conception School, Highland Park, IL and Holy Family HS, Waukegan, IL and Holy Rosary College, River Forest, IL before becoming a ‘Saluki’; joining Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority, and earning her Bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Southern Illinois University in Carbondale. She taught little ones in Kankakee, IL; Muncie, and Bloomington, IN.
During her senior year of college at Southern, she met a handsome graduate student named Don, after a year of dating and then graduation, her life with him began as they married 20 June 1959 at St. Theresa Catholic Church in Palatine, IL.
A fun, convertible car drive to their New Orleans honeymoon kicked off an enduring marriage filled with children, politics, travel and music. Dad’s employment with Eli Lilly & Company brought them to Indianapolis in 1966 to settle in Washington Twp. making it their home.
Mom had a very busy life by most people’s measure. In addition to raising five kids, with school activities and lots of sports, she remained connected to her Tri-Sigma sisters, and served as Panhellenic President in Indianapolis from 1987-1988. She received the Outstanding Alumna, Alpha Mu, award in 1988,1989 and 1990. She was a member of St. Luke Catholic Church for more than fifty years; active in Junior Symphony; the State Assembly Women’s Group; Riviera Club; SCORE Club; Bishop Chatard Bowling League; “Tuesday Tee Timers” Ladies golf league; and the Caroline Scott Harrison Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as a registrar.
Myrna was fortunate enough to have traveled extensively, throughout the world and the United States. Numerous trips were enjoyed with Don experiencing Taiwan, Ireland, Italy, The Holy Land, Australia, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland, Germany, Russia, Poland, England, Mexico, Panama Canal, Greece; and from New York to California to Hawaii, and many places in between back here at home. Though we all know her absolute favorite place was always, a cottage at Palisades Park, Michigan!
The Family would like to extend our love and heartfelt gratitude to the personal friends who have helped make this difficult time a little easier.
