Nancy Nearing McCarthy

Nancy Nearing McCarthy, 74 of Indianapolis departed this life at her home on Thursday, May 28, 2026 surrounded by loved ones. Nancy was born on July 22, 1951 in Muncie, Indiana to the late Charles Avery & Jane (Galbraith) Nearing.

She grew up in Muncie. Nancy was always active and loved all things outdoors and had many fond memories of summers at Lake Wawasee where she was the first woman to barefoot waterski! She was a passionate racquetball player, an avid reader, an accomplished gardener, and loved concerts, the theatre, community events, and animals.

She attended Burris High School in Muncie, IN and gratuated high school from Greenbrier College for Women in Lewisburg, West Virginia. She later attended Stevens College in Columbia, Missouri and Indiana University.

Nancy was a trailblazing stockbroker and manager at Charles Schwab for many years and recognized as the #1 Active Trader Representative for the company. Prior to Schwab, she worked for Borg Textiles in Chicago, IL, K.J. Brown & Co. in Indianapolis, IN and Robert Springer in Indianapolis, IN.

She was a proud member of The Daughters of the American Revolution and the Indiana Forest Alliance. She was a supporter and voice of Women's Rights and Planned Parenthood and active in local support of environmental conservation.

Nancy was preceded in death by her husbands, Danny Cumiskey, Thomas F. McCarthy, long time partner Rhett Schwandner and sister, Sarah Nearing Penn.

She is survived by her son, Thomas C. (Jenny) McCarthy; daughters, Merrie Burket and Cassie-Schwander-Matthews; sister Jayne Mann (Galliher); nieces and nephews, Emily, Mason, Cheney, David, Jim, Cami & Rebecca.
