Phyllis (Chapman) Wurster, age 91, passed peacefully from this earth on November 2, 2023 with her loving son Richard by her side. Phyllis was born on January 3, 1932, in Evanston, IL, to the late Robert Chapman and Minerva (Unger) Chapman. Phyllis was a remarkable woman who lived a fulfilling life, leaving behind cherished memories and a lasting impact on those who knew her.
Phyllis was known for her vibrant spirit and active lifestyle. She was a great athlete and sports fan; continuing to swim regularly, following Wimbledon, and cheering on her favorite teams well into her 80’s. She also had a passion for teaching others to swim and taught in Cleveland and at the Jordan YMCA in Indianapolis for many years. Phyllis had a deep appreciation for art and enjoyed collecting various pieces. The Indianapolis Museum of Art was a place she often frequented, finding solace and inspiration within its walls.
Phyllis graduated from Shortridge High School and attended Butler University, where she furthered her education and enriched her understanding of the world around her. She valued knowledge and embraced the opportunity for growth the education provided, continuing her learning throughout her life through reading, taking classes at IUPUI and participating in the Indiana Power Squadron. Phyllis met her husband, Donald Wurster, while attending Butler University, and they were married on January 9, 1956. She then dedicated her time to raising three energetic boys through moves to North Carolina, Cleveland, Ohio, and Indianapolis.
In her leisure time, Phyllis found joy in playing bridge, sewing, traveling, and indulging in her passion for art collecting. Her favorite trips were to Puerto Rico, to London with her sister Lois, and to New Zealand with her husband Don.
Phyllis is survived by her loving sons, Richard (Karen) Wurster and William Wurster, her brother Robert Chapman, sister Lois Beal, and her grandchildren Patrick Wurster, MD and Michael (Christina) Wurster. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Wurster and her son, Robert Wurster. Their memories will forever be treasured by those who know them.
