April 16,1948 - November 2, 2019
It is with heavy hearts we announce the passing of Lawley. He died peacefully in Inverary Manor with loved ones by his side.
Born in New Waterford, Cape Breton, he was a son of Donald Archibald (D.A.) Gillis formerly (from South West Margaree), and Sadie (MacNeil) Gillis (from Inverness).
Lawley spent his life in many places and had settled in Halifax for the last 20 years.
He is survived by his former wife and good friend, Susan (MacDonell) Gillis, Inverness; children, Billy Frank (Kristen), Inverness; Jenny May Gillis, Ottawa; and Robert Gillis, Edmonton; his cherished grandchildren, Anaya, Isla, Jonah and Lana; and his sisters, Florence van den Hoogen (Joe), Mabou; and Donna Gillis (Louis Cyr), Halifax.
He was dearly loved by nieces and nephews, cousins and by the many friends he made throughout his life.
He was predeceased by his father D.A., mother, Sadie; and brother, Angus Gillis as well as an infant brother.
Lawley was good-hearted and had a special gift for helping others, that transferred to his work and personal life. He was known for his sense of humor and sharp wit. No encounter with Lawley was without a laugh. He had a passion for horse racing; it was fitting that he spent the last 7 months of his life in view of the Inverness raceway.
Visitation will be held in Stella Maris Church, Inverness on November 6th from 10:00-10:45a.m. with Funeral Mass to follow at 11a.m., Father Dan MacDonald officiating. Burial in the parish cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Inverary Manor, Inverness.
