It is with great sadness that we announce the sudden passing of our dear brother Charles William MacDonald in his home on June 1, 2014. Charlie was born on October 27, 1949 in Inverness, to Alex Joe and Catherine (MacNeil) MacDonald. He was a treasured uncle to seven nephews and three nieces; granduncle to seven, and a long-time friend to many others. Charlie was an outstanding faithful member of the AA program. Surviving Charlie are John R., Alex Dan (Marie), Frank (Theresa), Maria Feehan (Joe), Alice, and Danny (Lorna). Charlie "Canoe" was a talented, thoughtful and funny man. He loved to write and took pleasure in contorting the English language into clever, zany comments on life’s absurdities. His homemade birthday cards and simple gifts from the heart will be missed. Charlie loved all sports but especially basketball, hockey and of course by default, harness racing. Many will fondly recall Charlie’s “Cat and Mouse Stables” in Truro where he lived with the horses and the later renowned “Lend’em, Mend’em, Send’em” stables at the Inverness Raceway. Perhaps one of Charlie’s fondest memories at the Inverness oval was the care, training, and driving of Kawartha Toronto.
Finally, Charlie’s life was enriched with a love of music and friends. He particularly took pride in the local Inverness talent pool of singers, writers and players; rarely turning down an opportunity to join the party, despite his declining health. So long Canoe, your last boat has just come in.
Visitation will be held this Thursday, June 5, 2014 from 2pm-4pm and 7pm-9pm. Funeral mass will take place at Stella Maris Church Friday, June 6 at 2:00pm. In lieu of flowers please send donations to the Inverness Hospital Foundation or a charity of your choice.
