Ewen Duncan MacEachen passed away on Tuesday September 13, 2022 due to natural causes. Ewen lived all his 72 years on this earth in Mabou, Cape Breton, Nova Scotia. Ewen was born to the late Alex Angus and Mary Florence (Gillis) MacEachen in Inverness, Nova Scotia on December 25, 1949. Ewen leaves behind his loving wife and best friend, Cathy (MacDonald); along with his sons, Lee (Yolaine) St. John’s, NL, Tyler (Sophie) Calgary, AB; and his daughter, Laurie (Jeremy), Calgary, AB. He also leaves behind his grandson and very best friend, Ewen (Lee), the only person in the world who could get him to do anything and everything.
Ewen is also survived by his six siblings, Gerard (Ellen), Fr. Lawrence, Josephine, David, Daniel, Raymond (Deniese); sister-in-law, Jan; twenty-three nieces and nephews; and nineteen grandnephews and grandnieces. He was predeceased by both his parents; his brothers, Francis and Angus Donald, as well as his sisters, Alanna and Francine.
Ewen was a friend to so many especially those with whom he worked, there were not many he crossed paths with who didn’t become a friend, from his colleagues at the Pulp Mill, the County of Inverness to his time out west on shutdowns in retirement. Dad never missed having his coffee and a chat at his brother's mechanic shop. He was so proud to be from Cape Breton and more importantly from Mabou. His bond with his elderly family and friends allowed him to gain wisdom and knowledge from the past that he actively shared throughout his life with anyone who was interested. He lived a full life of generosity and kindness, making sure no one was ever without or in need of anything. He never asked for anything in return, while offering everything he could.
Ewen was known as many things, Papa, Dad, Godfather, Uncle, Granduncle, Brother, Nephew and The Swede. He never went to bed without his tea and loved any tune that came from a Scottish fiddle. He was the Patriarch of our family, our guide, a loving hand, and a shoulder to rest upon that took us through so many things in life. He took on the adventure of life wholeheartedly and warmly, filled with laughter. Thank you for making us laugh, for carrying us all and thank you for loving every fiber of our being with every fiber of yours. And while you will never truly know what you were to so many people, we know that is the way you would want it.
In lieu of flowers, any donations can be made to Mabou and District Volunteer Fire Department, Mabou, Nova Scotia B0E 1X0. Visitation will be held in St. Mary’s Church, Mabou on Wednesday September 21, 2022 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm.
