Halifax/Harbourview
Isabel Lewiskin died peacefully December 10th, 2023 in Melville Lodge, Halifax at the age of 102.
Isabel was born in Harbourview, Inverness County, on August 25th, 1921, to Christena (MacMillan) and John A. MacNeil.
Like so many of her generation, Isabel left home as a young woman for work, initially to Toronto and then to New Jersey. It was in New Jersey where she met her first husband, Tom O’Connell. After Tom’s death in 1978, she married Maurice Lewiskin, who predeceased her in 2003.
While living in the United States, Isabel returned home to Cape Breton every summer. Eventually she and Maurice moved from the U.S. to Halifax while wintering in Florida and enjoying visits to family in Newfoundland. Isabel lived the past six years in Melville Lodge where she received excellent care.
She was an avid reader of various genres, especially biographies, and until well into her 90s she enjoyed watching curling and golf on TV. Until age made telephone conversations difficult, Isabel kept in regular touch with friends and relatives across Canada and the United States.
In addition to her parents and husbands, Isabel was predeceased by her brothers, Angus, Donald, Frank, Alex, and Jerry; as well as her nephew, Bob MacNeil and niece Sandra MacDonald. She is survived by many nieces and nephews and special friend, Amy Kenney.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Inverness Funeral Home, with funeral and burial service to take place at St. Peter’s Parish Church, Port Hood, in spring 2024.
