He grew up in Inverness and at a young age he left to make his living. He was in the service and was a Korean War Veteran. John spent many years in the US working as a security officer and several other occupations including a locksmith.
He returned to his beloved Cape Breton about 20 years ago. John was a very interesting and generous man, always ready to give to a good cause or help anyone in need.
John loved the outdoors, his garden, fishing, horses and the races. He loved sports, his Toronto Blue Jays and his cat Misty.
John was predeceased by his father; John H. Gehrke, mother; Florence Isabel (MacIsaac) MacDonnell, stepfather; Peter MacDonnell, his wife, his half brothers; John R. Gehrke, Father Angus Alex MacDonnell and his half sister; Marcella Cameron (Colin).
He is survived by his children, half brothers and half sisters; Neil MacDonnell, Robert (Harriet) MacDonnell, Ann (RJ) MacDougall, Christina (late John) Mullens, Julia (late Frank) Leahy, Mary (Marwood) Payne.
As per his wishes, cremation has taken place, and there will be no visitation. Burial will take place in St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Broad Cove at a later date.
We wish to thank his doctors, the staff of the ICMH and the Inverary Manor for the loving care John received. He appreciated every act of kindness and friendship shown to him.
