Joe will be deeply missed by his wife, Maria; and their two children, Conor and Cailin; his daughter-in-law, Kristina; and his treasured grandchildren, Tyler, Marlee and Lucca.
He is survived by his siblings, Lorette Yipp, Verna (Ted) Peters, Sheila, Duane and Floyd; the MacDonald family, John R., A. D. (Marie), Frank (Theresa), Danny (Lorna) and Alice. He will also be greatly missed by his nieces and nephews, grand-nieces and grand nephews, and many cherished friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Clifford and Virginia; his brother, Sextus; his sisters, Delores (Lally), Theresa (Alex) Gillis; sister-in-law, Kathleen (MacLellan) Feehan; brothers-in-law, Roy Yipp and Charlie (Canoe) MacDonald; and his In-laws, Alex Joe Iain and Kaye MacDonald.
Joe was a “Corner” boy who referred to his childhood as “having a touch of Twain’s Huck Finn and Tom Sawyer”. He cherished his memories of being with the Corner crew, playing hockey in their own rink and shack, baseball, building forts in the woods (still had a scar from that) and just hanging out.
Joe and Maria were married in 1986 and raised their two children in Middle Sackville but always returning to Inverness as much as possible. Joe worked mainly in the Construction business, but his most proud moments was being a father and grandfather. He was a lover of books, music, history, sports, politics, crossword puzzles, old movies, storytelling, laughter and trivia; all of which he excelled at. If you were playing Trivial Pursuit, you prayed you were on Joe’s team.
At the onset of Joe’s illness, Joe returned to Cape Breton to their beautiful cottage that he referred to as his sanctuary.
The family would like to thank the wonderful healthcare given to Joe in Inverness - our sincere thanks to Family Medical (Alex MacNeil), the Palliative Care Team, Continuing Care, Home Care, the Inverness Hospital, and the many friends who came to visit. We are sincerely grateful for the comfort and dignity given to him in his final days.
