Mary Ethel Frances Chisholm

December 3, 1951May 12, 2020

Mary Ethel Frances Chisholm, 68, of Port Hood, Nova Scotia, lost her courageous struggle with cancer on May 12, 2020. She was born to parents, Robbie MacKinnon and Bessie (MacMullin), on December 3, 1951 in Antigonish. She graduated from Judique-Creignish Consolidated School in 1969. She went on to study for a Bachelor of Arts and Education at St. Francis Xavier University and graduated in 1972. Ethel devoted 35 years to teaching children from Mabou to Creignish, first in Judique then in Port Hood. She retired from the Strait Regional School Board in 2008. She took great pleasure in her family, making many trips to various parts of the world, where her children would be living. She also enjoyed their visits at Christmas and in the summer. She took great pride in serving her parish, her community as a volunteer and as a Director of the East Coast Credit Union. She treasured time with friends, Celtic Music, travel and card playing. In 2017, she was honored with a volunteer of the year award for her work as Religious Education Coordinator. Ethel married Rod Chisholm in July, 1975 in Judique. Together they raised five children. Besides her husband, she is survived by her children, Cohen, Corrine, Stephanie (Declan), Jamieson(Marion) and Genevieve (Mike); cherished grandchildren, Valentina, Alex, Finn, Frank ,Mitchel, Nathan and Reed; sisters, Peggy (Sandy MacNeil), Malena (Drew MacSween), Karen (Paul Carrier); and many nieces and nephews. She was pre-deceased by Robbie and Bessie (parents) and Collena and Francis Campbell (sister and brother-in-law). We will be forever grateful to Lori Anne, Dr. Ritter, Dr. Saliba, Dr. Eagar, her home care nurses and nurses at Inverness Consolidated Memorial Hospital. Thanks to moms friends and neighbors for their frequent visits, cards of support and all the food and meals that were delivered. Special thanks to Father Eugene Morris and Father Vincent vanZutphen for their spiritual guidance. Funeral Mass will be at a later date and arrangements are under the care of the Inverness Funeral Home who has shown great compassion in our time of sorrow. Although I was not surprised to see Ethel's obituary, given her long struggle with cancer, it was still very sad to lose such a lovely woman. I first met her when we sat on the St. Joseph's Parish Council; it was a pleasure to work with her. Of course, I have also had the pleasure to meet most members of her lovely family. I recall asking Ethel to dance the last time I saw her at a square dance in Brook Village but she did not have the vigor to dance with me (or at least that was the excuse she used. :)) It was a joy to see her come to the dance when it no doubt took all her strength but I know she greatly enjoyed watching everyone else dance. I extend my sympathy to all of her family. Wayne

Rod & Family, Peggy, Malena, Karen & Families,
I was deeply saddened to hear of Ethel’s passing. She was always the same in all the years I knew her, first through my friendship with Collena, as a teacher to my son, and then as a colleague at Bayview. Always calm, kind, ready for a good laugh, and such a capable and compassionate teacher. She faced her illness with such courage and faith. My deepest sympathy.
