Mary Teresa Doyle Goodwin was born February 22, 1932, in Inverness and raised in Mabou, Nova Scotia. She is survived by her children, Jonathan, Micah, and Rachel and son-in-law, John. Beloved grandmother to Cullen, Caleigh, and Cameron. Predeceased by her father, Joseph Edward Doyle; mother, Catherine Isobel (Boyle) "Katie Belle"; brother, Jerome Angus Doyle. Mary Teresa graduated from St. Francis Xavier University in 1952 and earned a Master’s degree from the University of Toronto in 1953 where she studied public health and nutrition. She joined the christian women’s community Grailville in Ohio for two years that inspired her path to dedicate her professional life to nutrition and public health. Mary Teresa married Leonard Goodwin and settled in Maryland, where she raised her family and worked as a public health nutritionist for more than two decades. She published two books and numerous articles in the field of childhood nutrition. She testified at the US Congress and United Nations to ensure funding for various nutrition programs. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Mary Teresa had many interests, to include gardening, cooking, hiking, family history, yoga, spirituality, and social and environmental causes. She took great pride in her beautiful her home. She had many friends with which she shared enjoyable adventures and entertaining conversations. Upon her retirement, she returned to Mabou and developed the children's garden. She always loved a good party and social gathering. She will be remembered for her dynamic personality and creative ideas. Thank you to everyone at Green Meadows for taking dear care of our mother.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in the Vestry of St. Mary's Church, Mabou. Funeral Mass will be held on Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Church, Mabou, with Father Bernie MacDonald officiating.
