The family of Catherine Ryan announces with sadness her passing at the age of 99 on August 27, 2010, in Inverary Manor, Inverness. Born on April 1, 1911, in St. Joseph Du Moine, she was a daughter of the late Jean Louis and Vitaline (LeBlanc) Doucet. Catherine attended Holy Family School in Inverness and subsequently worked in Inverness and New Waterford before residing in Inverness with her family. Catherine held positions with Stella Maris CWL, the NaMara Seniors Club, and served as an employee for Canada Post. Catherine and her brother Willie Joe, members of the church choir, were highly sought entertainers in Inverness social circles. Especially remembered were the St. Patrick’s Day gatherings at grandma and grandpa Ryan’s home on River Street. Catherine’s hobbies included playing cards (especially “auction”) with her Hillcrest Street cronies, bingo, knitting, reading, horse racing and baseball. An outstanding cook, Catherine’s Acadian recipes were second to none. She was known for her insightful wit, her keen eye and as one who would never miss a “trick”. Her cup was always full. Catherine is survived by her sons, Jim (Margaret), Tom (Beth), Doug (Caroline), all of Inverness; grandsons, Tom Ryan, Victoria; Calum Ryan, Halifax; Liam Ryan, Kentville; James Ryan, Halifax; David Ryan, Yellowknife; Tim Ryan, Iqaluit; Michael Ryan, Halifax; brother, Willie Joe Doucet, Inverness; many caring nieces and nephews and members of her extended family. She was predeceased by her husband, James Ryan; sisters, Alice Denoumoustier and Josephine Doucet. Visitation will take place from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. today, August 30 in Inverness Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, August 31 in Stella Maris Church, Father Duncan MacIsaac officiating. Interment will follow in Inverness Cemetery. A reception will be held in Inverness Fire Hall shortly after interment. Special thanks to the exemplary staff of Inverary Manor who helped Catherine through her twilight years and up to her final hours. Donations in her memory may be made to Inverary Manor.
