We regret to announce the passing of our beloved father, Walter Hinkley on June 1, 2022 in Dartmouth General Hospital at the age of 97 years young.
Walter was born on May 10, 1925 to the late Joseph and Sadie (Burton) Hinkley of Pleasant Bay.
He is survived by his children, Geraldine, Port Hawkesbury; Sadie (Peter), Dartmouth; Joseph (Margaret), Middle River; and Juanita, Inverness; his 24 grandchildren, 54 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Walter was predeceased by his wife, Marion; daughters, Shirley Phillips and Doreen Gale; 4 grandchildren, Joyce, Walter, Daryl Scott and Karen Lynn; brother, Myles; sister Mable; and his partner of 22 years, Kaye Timmons.
In the late 1930’s at the young age of 13, he worked his first job as a water boy for construction workers building roads over the mountains of the Cabot Trail. He then worked with his father fishing lobster for $3.00 per 100lbs. In 1942, Walter moved to the Margarees, where he met and married the love of his life, Marion (Phillips). Together they raised 6 children. He continued to work in the forestry industry and saw mills for many years.
Walter was a proud member of the Margaree AA Serenity 12 Step Group for over 50 years. In 2020 he obtained 40 years of continued sobriety, always living one day at a time.
Walter remained living in Margaree until the age of 91 before moving to Dartmouth in 2016 with his daughter Sadie and Peter, who provided him with the best loving care and happiness in his final years. During this time, he continued to enjoy playing cards, doing puzzles and mostly, his trips home to Pleasant Bay, where his heart always remained.
We will forever miss his wonderful stories, his challenging riddles, his funny jokes and especially his humorous little tunes that he loved to sing.
