Bobbie Alton Birdett was born August 8, 1928 in Dublin, Texas to Alton “Lefty” and Marie (McCarty) Birdett. A long-time Wichita County resident, he died January 19, 2013 in Weatherford, Texas, where he had resided for a year.
Bobbie attended schools in Dublin and Palacios, Texas and entered the US Navy in Wichita Falls, Texas in 1946. He married the “girl next door”, Emily Faye Coen on March 6, 1948 in Wichita Falls and they were together for 54 years until her death in 2002.
Among other jobs, Bobbie was employed by the Atomic Energy Commission in Los Alamos, New Mexico from 1954 to 1959 and retired from Civil Service at Sheppard AFB in 1983.
Bobbie and Faye were both active in the VFW and its auxiliary organization, the Military Order of the Cootie. Bobbie served as Supreme Commander of the MOC for 1984-85 and Supreme Quartermaster 1983-94.
Bobbie is survived by three children: Charl Roberson and husband, Steve of Weatherford, Texas; Stephanie Birdett of Louisville, Kentucky; and Tom Birdett and wife, Kathey of Brownwood, Texas, five grandchildren: Stacey Roberson and wife, Heidi, of Castle Rock, Colorado; Rebecca Martini and husband, Michael, of Mansfield, Texas; Lisa Woods and husband, Tom of San Angelo, Texas; Cyndi Larrimore and husband, Steve of Austin, Texas; and Brenda Surles and husband, Jacob of Gonzales, Texas. He also has nine great-grandsons: TJ, Tanner, Tyler and Trace Woods, Spencer and Ty Roberson, Keaton Larrimore, and Donovan Surles, and one great-granddaughter: Charlie Martini and one great-great-granddaughter: Aubree Woods. Another great-granddaughter is expected in the Spring.
He is also survived by a sister, Lela Mai Nolen of Howe, Texas and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 2:00 PM on Thursday, January 24 at Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park with interment immediately following at Highland Cemetery, also in Iowa Park.
Visitation will be from 6 until 8 pm Wednesday, January 23, 2013 at Dutton Funeral Home.
The family requests that memorials be directed to the Friendly Door Senior Citizens Center of Iowa Park, Texas.
