Darrell was born July 21, 1940, in Wichita Falls, Texas, to the late Virgil and Estelle (Bradberry) Johnson. He married Lavacca “Sam” Moore on January 24, 1969, in Wichita Falls, TX.
Darrell attended City View Elementary, Zundy Junior High and graduated in 1959 from Wichita Falls High School. He left immediately for Naval Boot Camp in California. He had already served a year in the Naval Reserves. Later, Darrell received a medical discharge and was quite disappointed! Upon returning to Wichita Falls, he went to work for John E. Martin Chemical Company and formed a lifelong friendship with Mr. Martin and his family.
Ultimately, driving trucks was his true calling! From hauling cattle coast to coast, delivering oil field chemicals, Owens Sausage, bull riding, and selling Singer Sewing Machines, he was quite successful. He was not afraid to work!
Darrell made his career driving for Roadway Express for 30 years. He competed in truck driving/truck parking competitions back in the day and received awards from the local to national level. Darrell was awarded Employee of the Year in 1990.
Upon retirement, Darrell took up golf for a bit, and made a hole-in-one on #10 at Weeks Golf Course. More than anything, he loved to be outside! It didn’t matter if he was just sitting on the carport or mowing/landscaping, he enjoyed the outdoors. He rarely sat still as there was always a project that needed to be done on his property and he was very meticulous/particular on how it was to be done!
He was involved in his granddaughters’ active lives from helping carpool 6:00 a.m. practices, driving them to orthodontist appointments, and attending numerous sporting events. He made sure they always had snacks readily available at his house, especially Oscar Mayer hot dogs, Sam’s size boxes of Twix bars, and pinwheels.
Survivors include his daughter, Tracy Lynn Otto and husband, Steve, of Wichita Falls; twin sons, Darell Edward Johnson of Iowa Park and Lewis William Johnson and wife, Sylvia, of Iowa Park; three granddaughters, Mary Michelle Otto and husband, Greg Parkman, of Wichita Falls, Emily Veitenheimer and husband, Travis, of Holliday, and Hayli Otto of Fort Worth; one sister, Patricia Taylor of Wichita Falls; one brother-in-law, David Keller of Bedford; and four great-grandchildren, Addison, Caden, Bennett & Gabriel Veitenheimer.
The family would like to thank Hospice of Wichita Falls for the loving care and support they provided. Their assistance allowed Dad to stay at home as he wished. God Bless You.
