Please indulge me in my poor attempt to tell the story of a great person, Diana Lee (Clark) Staggs. To say that she was an amazing woman who will be missed, is still very much loved, and will always be cherished, is truly an understatement. A woman known for the love of her family and called Mom or Grandma by so many people outside of the family.
Diana’s story begins in Eureka, California, as the youngest of six to Joseph W. Clark & Marjorie May Kerr Clark. Her brothers and sisters were Joy McComb, Richard Clark, Carl Clark, Gay Murray, and Merry Baldwin. Diana’s biological mother passed away at an early age and Joseph married the woman, Marie Clark, that Diana would know as Mom for most of her life. Diana also welcomed a sister, Sherrell Taylor with the marriage.
It was well known how well Diana regarded her time in Eureka and her family there. Even as a child, she proved her remarkable strength by overcoming Scarlet Fever. She graduated from Eureka High School in June 1962 and married Phillip Joel Staggs in December 1962, in Eureka, California.
Soon after marrying Phil, who had joined the USAF, she moved to Travis Air Force Base (AFB) in Fairfield, CA. In 1964, she was blessed with her first child, Scot Allan Staggs. As the wife of a military professional, there were quite a few location changes throughout Phil’s career. Diana was able to experience these locations with Phil such as Hill AFB (Ogden, UT), Mather AFB (Sacramento, CA), Incirlik AFB (Turkey), and Wiesbaden, Germany where she was blessed with her second child, Sheila Staggs in 1970. It was during her time in Germany when Diana started working for AAFES (Army & Air Force Exchange Service).
Diana continued to move with Phil to Peterson AFB (Colorado Springs, CO), Shaw AFB (Sumter, SC), and Sheppard AFB (Iowa Park, TX). Diana and Phil remained in Iowa Park, TX for about 15 years where they made life-long friends, saw both of their children graduate high school and college, and welcomed her first grandchild, Jessie (Staggs) Asiatico in 1989.
Diana survived her first bout with cancer (breast) in 1991. Phil retired from the USAF in 1988, but Diana continued her career within AAFES taking assignments in Forth Worth, TX, and Fort Huachuca (Sierra Vista, AZ), where she welcomed her second grandchild Toni Spratt in 2000, before retiring from AAFES in 2004, and returning to Iowa Park, TX. While in Iowa Park, Diana welcomed her third grandchild, John Spratt, on her 61st birthday. In 2009, Diana was able to survive her second bout with cancer (ovarian). Finally, Diana was able to welcome her great granddaughter, Hadasah Asiatico in 2018.
Diana was an incredibly giving person who dearly loved her family and friends. Her gift of sewing and crafts cannot be forgotten as they are in everyone’s house and used every day. Any opportunity that she had; she would lend a helping hand if needed. We all considered her our gravity and thought that she would always be the center of our family.
Diana is survived by: husband Phillip Joel Staggs; children Scot Staggs & wife Shelly Staggs, Sheila Spratt & husband Tony Spratt; Grandchildren Jessie Asiatico & Husband Scott Asiatico, Toni Spratt & John Spratt; great granddaughter: Hadassah Asiatico; Sisters: Merry Baldwin & Sherell Taylor.
For those who would like to honor Diana with memorial donations, please do so to the following two organizations the National Breast Cancer Foundation, Inc. and Hospice of Wichita Falls.
Memorial services will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, December 18, 2021 in the chapel at Dutton Funeral Home in Iowa Park, Texas.
