June 28, 1918 – March 22, 2018
Iva Harriette Rogers Laird, 99, of Little Rock, passed away March 22, 2018. She was born June 28, 1918, in her grandmother’s front bedroom in Taylor County, Texas. Harriette graduated with an education degree from Abilene Christian College and began her teaching career in Abilene, TX. In 1949, she married Joe Laird, who preached the gospel in Churches of Christ throughout Oklahoma. Harriette assisted Joe in Bible studies, taught bible classes, and raised their two children, Angela and David. Harriette taught school many years in Iowa Park, where she was well respected and dearly loved by her students. No doubt, she influenced her daughter, Angela, who later became a highly regarded university professor and administrator. At the age of 82, Harriette moved to Little Rock, Arkansas to be nearer to her daughter, Angela, and grandchildren. She became active in ladies classes at Pleasant Valley Church of Christ, worshipping there until her mid-90’s. Harriette was a friend to all who knew her. She was known for having a sweet, gentle spirit and good sense of humor. She was an avid reader until the last year of her life, reading her bible daily for as long as she was able. While experiencing her share of adversity over the years, her faith in God and a trust in His promises brought her thru. Harriette was preceded in death by her husband of 38 years, Joe Willard Laird; an infant daughter, Janice Sue Laird; daughter, Angela Laird Brenton; son, Joe David Laird; parents, Ernest and Laura Rogers; brother, John Milton Rogers; and sister, Peggy Rogers Sullivan. She is survived by son-in-law, Keith Brenton, of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; two grandchildren, Matthew Scott Brenton, of Cabot, Arkansas, and Laura Leigh Brenton of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; great-grandson, Kayson; and nephew, Roger Sullivan (Carol) of North Richland Hills, Texas. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 2:00 PM, Roller-Chenal Funeral Home, Little Rock, AR. Memorial service and burial will be at Highland Cemetery in Iowa Park, TX on March 26, 2018 at 1:00 PM. Both Harriette and Angela were devoted to education.
