Anna Evelyn Calvert

COLUMBIA - Anna Evelyn Calvert died Friday, January 29, 2016, at Palmetto Parkridge Hospital after a brief illness. Born May 9, 1918, in Quentin, Oklahoma, the daughter of Edwin and Anna Oakey, she was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Roland V. Calvert; her brothers, Shelton Oakey and Joel Oakey; and her son-in-law, George Meleski. Evelyn spent most of her adult life in Pasadena, Maryland, where she was active in the Anne Arundel Historical Society and a dedicated volunteer at the Benson Hammond House. She was a member of Magothy Methodist Church for 57 years and was employed for 22 years by Equitable Bank of Brooklyn, Maryland. She retired in 1986, moved to Columbia, South Carolina in 1990 and joined Virginia Wingard United Methodist Church. There she participated in the Ladies Bible Class, the Jeannetta Schwartz Circle and the LRE Visitation Committee, visiting many shut-ins and folks in nursing homes. She is survived by daughters, Eleanor Meleski of Richmond, Virginia, Diana and husband, William J Westerkam of Columbia; son, Gary and wife, Kathy Calvert of Millersville, Maryland; seven grandchildren, David, Mark and Matthew Meleski of Richmond, Danny and Randy Westerkam of Columbia, Gary Michael Calvert of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Sarah Calvert of Millersville, Maryland; fifteen great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, February 6, 2016, at Virginia Wingard UMC. The family will receive friends in the church Welcome Center immediately following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, is assisting the family.
