COLUMBIA - Our community sadly lost a pillar on Tuesday, January 19, 2021, when Mr. Cecil W. McCullough, Jr., favorably known as MAC, passed away. Mr. McCullough, 86, was born and a lifelong resident in Columbia, SC. He was the son of the late Cecil W. McCullough, Sr. and Lena Helen Simon McCullough.
Cecil was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church where met his beautiful bride, Jacqueline Ann Williamson McCullough, while coaching their Women's Church Basketball Team. Together they won 2 league Championships and fell in love. They were married 51 years and enjoyed traveling to Super Bowls, Las Vegas, Hawaii, Lake Tahoe, The Bahamas and Myrtle Beach, tailgating and attending Carolina Football games, playing cards and dancing together especially to 1950s music. Cecil could really cut a rug! And oh how he loved Elvis!
After graduating from Columbia High School, Cecil joined the U.S. Army. He was discharged with a Purple Heart and went into the advertising business which led to a successful career in residential and commercial real estate investments. When Cecil wasn't making business deals, he could be found bowling and shooting pool. Cecil loved competition and won many tournaments at the city, state and national levels. Cecil even gave beginner billiard lessons every Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. until he was 85 years old!
Cecil is survived by the loving community of Columbia, SC and his three precious daughters, Betsy Hall (Kevin), Kim Westbury, both of Blythewood, SC and Kathi Shepherd (Roger) of Hilton Head Island, SC; and five adorable grandchildren, Austin McCullough of Savannah, GA, Brittany Hall of Lexington, SC, Carsyn Hall of Blythewood, SC, Lauren Westbury of Los Angeles, CA and Callie Shepherd of Boston, MA.
In addition to his supportive parents and one of a kind wife, he was predeceased by his full of laughter sister, Helen Nezah McCullough Dreher.
Cecil's legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of everyone he interacted with as well as those he reached but never met. Share your stories of remembrance on Saturday, January 30th from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the family at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC 29063. Light Refreshments will be served.
The funeral service will be held on Saturday, January 30, 2021 at 2 o'clock in the afternoon at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1715 Bull Street in Columbia, with the interment service immediately following at Elmwood Cemetery.
