The family of Charles ‘Charlie’ Aull of Columbia is greatly saddened to announce his passing on March 26, 2018 at Parkridge Hospital, Columbia. He had bravely fought esophageal cancer for 18 months and died aged 61.
Charles was born on May 26, 1956, to the late Col (retired) Charles and Llewellyn Aull of Forest Acres. He was a graduate of A.C. Flora High School and the University of South Carolina where he gained a Bachelor’s degree in Music. He also gained Master’s degrees in Music History from the University of Georgia and Music Performance from Eastman School of Music.
Charles was employed for over 30 years at the South Carolina Department of Transportation as a Systems Programmer. As well as enjoying his work, he valued greatly the many close friends he made among fellow staff members.
He pursued his lifelong passion for music, both classical and popular, by performing with a variety of musical organizations, including on tuba with the Palmetto Concert Band, the Carolina Wind Symphony and, most recently, on bass guitar with the Congaree New Horizons Band and the JCM jazz trio.
Charles had a great interest in the history of the Wars of the Roses, the Civil War and the Second World War. He was also a keen and concerned observer of current American affairs.
A man of deep Christian faith, Charles was a committed and much valued member of Hope Lutheran Church, Irmo, where he contributed to a range of church activities including serving as Worship Elder.
With his great sense of humor and infectious laugh, Charles was an enthusiastic supporter of the Georgia Bulldogs - a source of much enjoyable banter with his father who was an equally enthusiastic supporter of the Clemson Tigers.
He and his family regularly attended and appreciated the Aull Family Thanksgiving celebrations held in Pomaria.
Charles will be sorely missed by his family who loved him so very much. He was a devoted husband and father, and a constant source of support and encouragement to his wider family and friends.
He is survived by his loving wife, Susan, and daughters Dana Wilkes and Hannah Moody. He is also survived by his sisters Dr. Charlotte Aull Davies of Swansea (Wales) and Helen Aull Shockey of Charlotte NC, brothers-in-law Jim (Jayne) McDaniel, Ronnie (Cyndi) McDaniel, Hywel Davies and James Shockey, son-in-law Brandon Moody, numerous nephews and nieces in the United States and one niece, Elen Davies, in Wales.
The family wishes to express their gratitude for the warm and tender care that Charles received from staff at Parkridge Hospital, Palmetto Health Hospice, South Carolina Oncology Associates and Duke University Hospital.
A Memorial Service will be conducted by Pastor Joseph Lindloff at 2 o’clock on Thursday, March 29, 2018 at Hope Lutheran Church. The family will receive friends following the service at the church until 4 o’clock. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo is assisting the family.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to Hope Lutheran Church, 1400 Kennerly Road, Irmo, SC 29063 or Duke Cancer Institute, Gastrointestinal Cancers Fund, www.gifts.duke.edu/dci .
