Dorothy Jean Amis was born March 30, 1933 in Des Moines, Iowa, to Harold and Elizabeth (Robinson) McVay. Dorothy graduated from North High School Des Moines, Iowa in 1951. She married Don Amis on September 4, 1954. Dorothy was a member of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church where she was very involved in Bible studies, women’s group, and other church activities. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Dorothy enjoyed quilting, needle point, gardening, and many other hobbies. She was supportive of her children’s school activities and attended all of their events. Family has always been important to Dorothy and she was a great encourager to them all, including her nieces and nephews.
Dorothy worked several different jobs over the years, including the Northwestern Bell telephone company, a plumbing company as secretary, an engineering company as office manager, the Iowa Historical Museum Foundation and owned her own office management consultant company. She resided in Des Moines, Iowa until 1987 when her and her husband moved to Jackson, TN. They retired to Chapin, SC in 1996.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and a brother, and daughter Denise Dick. She is survived by her husband of 69 years, Donald Amis; children, Debbie Roden, Doug (Linda) Amis, Dan Amis; 8 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a sister Deanna Howell; as well as a large extended family; and many friends
A memorial service for will be held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 30, 2024 at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church, with a reception following the service at the church.
