COLUMBIA - Dorothy “Dot” Raines Porter, 96, passed away on March 26, 2024. She was born in Columbia, SC to the late John Durham and Agatha Harper Raines. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 73 years, Olan M. Porter, their daughter, Nancy Rosales Palmer, sister Hilda (JE) Nix, and brother John O. “Jack” (Irma) Raines.
She is survived by her son Alan (Joan) Porter, grandchildren Wendy (Derrick) Lanier, David (Katie) Rosales, Jason (Staci) Porter, Alison (Josh) Butcher and six great-grandchildren.
She became a resident of Epworth Children’s Home at the age of eight after the death of her father. She lived there until graduation from Epworth High School. She worked with her mother at a dime store until she got married. She lived in several states with her husband as he worked in construction. Later on they settled back in Columbia. She worked at USF&G insurance company where she retired after 29 years. She was a longtime member of Virginia Wingard UMC.
Visitation will be held at Virginia Wingard UMC at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, March 30, 2024, followed by a funeral service at 2:00 p.m. Burial will be held in Elmwood Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Jason Porter, David Rosales, Chandler Lanier, Josh Butcher, Aidan Butcher, Aaron Culler. Honorary Pallbearers are Bobby Raines and Steve Palmer.
