
Services for Edna Simon Free will be held Friday, February 16, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. Burial will follow in Crescent Hill Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from noon until 1:00 p.m. prior to the service at the the funeral home.
Born in Columbia, SC, Mrs. Free was the daughter of Melver and Dovie Simon. She graduated from Columbia High School and attended Draughon’s Business College, majoring in accounting. She worked at Phoenix Furniture Company for many years and later at Columbia City Hall as an accountant, retiring in 1996. After retiring she became a licensed massage therapist and enjoyed this for several years.
Mrs. Free travelled extensively and participated in senior aerobics, line dancing, and shagging. She was a member of the Columbia Ballroom Association and travelled to various exhibitions, earning awards. She was an active member of the Capital City Club. She enjoyed part-time modeling for Belk and Pennys. She was a member of Virginia Wingard Methodist Church and the Ladies Bible Class.
Surviving are her sister, Frances S. Richardson; nephews, Ronald and Alan (Lynda) Richardson, Johnny (Necia) Free; great nephews, Stephen (Chelsey) Richardson, Bryan (Kayce) Richardson, Duane (Michele) Richardson; and great niece, Stacey (Todd) Sanders.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Robert L. Free; brothers, Melvin Simon, Jr., Carl E. Simon; and sister, Mary S. Ready.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Minister’s Discretionary Fund, Virginia Wingard Methodist Church, 1500 Broad River Road, Columbia, SC 29210.
