IRMO - Memorial services for Edward A. Harney of Irmo, S.C., will be conducted on Thursday, April 5 at 11:00 a.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo. The family will receive friends immediately following the services. Memorials may be made to Union United Methodist Church, Music Fund, P.O. Box 705, Irmo SC 29063.
Edward Harney, 88, died on Thursday, March 29, 2018 in Atlanta, Ga. Born December 28, 1929 in Cynthiana, KY, he was the son of the late Lawrence and Grace Fuller Harney. In 1948, Edward enlisted in the US Marine Corps. Following recruit training he was assigned to Parris Island, S.C., Korea, and Camp Lejeune, N.C In 1954, while stationed at Camp Lajeune, Staff Sergeant Harney received orders for Officer Training in Quantico,Va. Following officer training, Major Harney was assigned to Pensacola, Fla. where he then attended flight school. After completing his service with the Marine Corps Air Facility Futenma in Okinawa, Japan, he returned to Pensacola as a Flight Instructor. His military career continued in 1964 when he was transferred to Quantico,Va. for Amphibious Warfare School as well as Marine Helicopter Squadron One. He then served as Presidential Helicopter Command Pilot and Projects Officer. In 1967 he was relocated to Marine Air Facility, Santa Ana, Calif. for transition training and as Flight Instructor; before serving 1st Marine Aircraft Wing in Vietnam for 13 months where he flew in excess of 200 combat missions. Returning to Santa Ana, he served as Operations Officer of Marine Aircraft Group 56 until his retirement in 1969 with 21 years of active service.
Edward and his family then moved to Irmo, SC where he began a career with the S.C. Aeronautics Commission, serving as a Special Missions Pilot, retiring in 1989.In 1990, he was awarded the Order of the Palmetto by Governor Carroll Campbell and was commissioned a Kentucky Colonel in 2008 by Governor Steven Beshear.
Edward was a member of Union United Methodist Church in Irmo, S.C. since 1970, having served in numerous capacities to include the Administrative Board, Board of Trustees, Building and Maintenance Committee and Pastor/Parish Committee. Edward was a member of the Ailene Leitner Fellowship Class and served on the staff of the Living Christmas Story for four years.
An avid golfer, Edward was a member of Coldstream Golf Club; a long time camper and a member of several camping organizations; a member of various military organizations; and previously owned two private aircrafts.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 67 years, Katherine Koger Harney; son Allen and his wife Sue of Lexington, S.C.; daughter Resa of Atlanta, Ga.; grandson Eric of Raleigh, N.C.; grandson Evan of Irmo, S.C.; and great grandson A.J. of Irmo, S.C. He was predeceased by eight brothers and one sister.

I have only fond memories of my Uncle Ed. He was always a gentleman, easy to talk to, and had a caring heart. I always looked forward to family reunions where we could visit and loved visiting you in Irmo.
