Edwin Cleveland Powell Sr., affectionately known as “Jack,” passed away on October 3, 2026, at the age of 80. Born on June 14, 1946, in Wedgefield, South Carolina, he was the son of the late Jimmie Powell and Edna Taylor-Powell.
Jack grew up in Wedgefield before moving to Jersey City, New Jersey, in 1966 with his wife, Omega. The couple later settled in New York City, where they raised their family of five children and built a life together centered on hard work, family, and love.
For more than 40 years, Jack worked in the construction industry, earning the respect of those around him through his strong work ethic and dedication. Following his retirement, he returned to Wedgefield for a time. As his health declined, he later moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where he could be close to his family and receive their love, support, and care.
Jack was truly a man of integrity. He was hardworking, generous, loving, fun, and deeply devoted to his family. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends, dancing, and a good game of spades. He was always willing to lend a helping hand and could be counted on when someone he loved needed him.
He encouraged his children to work hard, do their best, and take pride in what they did. Jack was also known for speaking his mind and for the honesty that was simply part of who he was. His laughter, kindness, and genuine personality left an impression on those fortunate enough to know him.
Family meant everything to Jack, and his love was most clearly demonstrated through his actions. He especially treasured his grandchildren and remained involved in their lives. When family members needed him, he stepped forward without hesitation, including taking on the care and responsibility of Trinece and Takeria when they needed his support. His commitment to his family reflected the strength, generosity, and dependability that defined his life.
Jack shared 61 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Omega Powell (Pollard).
In addition to his wife, he leaves to cherish his memory his children, Patricia Powell, and grandchildren Lionel, Lance, Lydia, and Leah; Evelyn Powell, and grandchild Dimitrus; Barbra Powell, and grandchildren Shakeema, Shania, Shakeya, and Shakyla; Trina Powell, and grandchildren Takeria, Trinece, and Trinity; and Makeeta Powell, and grandchildren Lamor, Tichina, Trinasia, and Lavonte. He also leaves behind 11 great-grandchildren.
Jack is also survived by his siblings, Calvin Powell, Evelyn Powell, Lynette Powell, Marvin Powell, and Carolyn Hinkley, along with a loving extended family of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends.
He was preceded in death by his son, Edwin Powell Jr.; his father, Jimmie Powell; his mother, Edna Taylor-Powell; and his sister, Jean Powell-Baker.
Jack lived a life grounded in integrity, love, responsibility, and hard work. He appreciated the blessings of life and gave freely of himself to the people around him. His legacy is one of strength, generosity, unwavering love, and devotion to family. Though he will be greatly missed, the lessons he taught, the memories he created, and the love he gave will continue to live on through generations of his family.
A Celebration of Life for Jack will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. A reception will immediately follow the service in the funeral home’s Tribute Room.
