

Floyd was born on October 11, 1947 in Ballentine S.C. He was the son of late Mr. Colie Winford Derrick and Mrs. Sadie Isolene Metz Derrick both of Ballentine. He was the brother of late Mr. Norman T. Derrick and Brother in law of late Mrs. Harriette Derrick. Brother in-law of late Ms. Cathy Catoe. Father of the late Mr. Michael Floyd
Derrick and the husband of the late Mrs. Linda Sue Catoe Derrick.
Mr. Floyd is survived by his son Mr. Bryan J. Derrick and daughter Ms. Shelby L. Derrick (Chapin, S.C.) Also surviving are his brother in laws, Mr. Dennis W. Catoe and Mr. Steve Athens; grandchildren: Eden R. Derrick, Maximus O. Derrick, Cash M. (Derrick) Allison, Colton L. Derrick; nephews, Tim Derrick and Dwayne Derrick; niece, Jasmine Catoe; great-grand niece, Jessica Derrick DeLoach. Floyd was born and raised in Ballentine S.C.
He attended Irmo High School and graduated in 1965. He was among the first senior class to complete their entire senior year at the newest location of Irmo High School which is still located at 6671 St. Andrews Road. During his time at Irmo High School, Floyd was a student school bus driver making sure all his fellow classmates got to school safely. Floyd served as the President of school’s chapter of the Future Farmers of America (FFA). He also played, started and lettered in Football.
After graduating high school, Floyd joined the South Carolina National Guard. He trained at Fort Jackson and then was stationed At McEntire Joint (Air Force & Army) National Guard Base in Eastover S.C. While serving in the Nation Guard he also started his career at Southern Bell in Columbia, S.C. Floyd worked as a Construction/Line man installing and repairing the majority if not all the phones lines under the streets of Downtown Columbia.During his career he had been promoted to a supervisor position over construction and retired after 30 years of service. During his 30 years at the phone company he continued his services in the national guard. Floyd was part of C (Checkmate) Company. He was a crew chief on a Huey M. Model Helicopter. He also was worked on the first Apache Helicopters that arrived at the McEntire in the Base. Floyd’s Huey Helicopter is now a static display at the S.C. Military Museum located in downtown Columbia.
In 1972 he met and married his late wife Linda. He and Linda lived in Ballentine and Irmo during the early years of their marriage. They served together as youth group leaders at the Salem United Methodist Church In Ballentine. They raised three (3) children, two sons and one daughter, who all attended Irmo High School. In 2001 they moved to Chapin S.C. Floyd and Linda were married for 52 years. Floyd’s wife Linda passed prior to him in February of 2024. Floyd worked for, provided for, served as the protector, was the foundation, the rock and the strengthen of his family and for all of those he loved. Thank you Dad for be being our rock. We love you and miss you dearly. You will never be far away because we will always carry you in our hearts. Love you daddy.
A Memorial service will be held on Saturday June 6th, 2026 at 1:00 PM, at Dunbar Funeral Home - Dutch Fork, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, South Carolina 29063.
