George H. Fann Jr.

July 8, 1944August 7, 2018

Dr. George Hersel Fann, Jr. was called home to be with our Lord on August 7, 2018 after putting up a valiant fight against cancer. Visitation will be Sunday, August 12, 2018 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel from 6-8 pm. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 13 at 10:30 am at Riverland Hills Baptist Church with interment following at Woodridge Memorial Park. Born July 8, 1944 in Kingstree, SC, George was the son of the late George Hersel Fann, Sr. and Lorena Odom Fann. George is survived by his loving wife of 51 years, Gaye Hynds Fann of Columbia; his four children Greg Fann (Angie) of Temecula, CA, Jeff Fann (Dorie) of Greenville, Justin Fann of Lexington, and Marissa Hill (Jason) of Lexington; grandchildren Jeffrey, Chandler, Walker, Ryder and Dempsey Fann of Greenville, Brinkley, Arleigh and Liam Hill of Lexington, and Daxton Hakim of Lexington. He is also survived by his sisters Franki (Pat) Roberts of Alexandria, VA and Maree (Billy) Webster of Greenville as well as five nieces and nephews and their spouses. George is also survived by his sister in-law, Lisa Saye (Tom) of Chapin, and brother in-law Larry Hynds of Gaston. George attended Clemson University and was an avid Tiger fan. He graduated from the University of Louisville with a Doctorate in Dental Medicine. He served as a dentist in the US Navy for two years before he and Gaye moved to Columbia where George diligently served in his practice for 46 years. He truly loved and cared for all his patients, whom he also considered friends. George was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church where he served as an Usher and a Deacon. Throughout his life, George served in many capacities including Chairman of the Board at Lexington Medical Center, Founding Member of First Community Bank, a member of The Academy of General Dentistry, and the South Carolina Dental Association. He received many accolades including the Order of the Palmetto, and was recently honored as a Member Emeritus from the First Community Bank Board of Directors. Though he will be dearly missed, George’s life lessons such as “Remember to Represent the Family Well,” always work hard and share the fruits of your labor with others, travel and see the world, and smile and speak to everyone you encounter will always be remembered and treasured by his family. In his memory, George asked that donations be made to Resurrection Church, a church in Oakland, CA recently planted by his nephew, Rev. Brent Webster. Donations may be mailed to Resurrection Oakland, 4123 Broadway #816, Oakland, CA 94611. You can read more about Resurrection Oakland at

Mrs. Fann and family,
I was deeply saddened when I heard Dr. George had passed. He was a true gentleman and wonderful person. I know you all are proud of all of Dr. George's accomplishments. What an amazing person. I am honored to have known him and blessed to have been able to even tag along with Dr. Fann and Rusty on a few fishing trips. Please know you are in our thoughts and prayers. He will be missed by my entire family, my parents and children included.

My words cannot adequately express my sympathy for George's family, so I borrowed from Leo Buscaglia.

I know for certain that we never lose the people we love, even to death. They continue to participate in every act, thought and decision we make. Their love leaves an indelible imprint in our memories. We find comfort in knowing that our lives have been enriched by having shared their love.

We would like to extend our sincere sympathy to the Fann family. Dr. Fann was our family dentist for over 30 years. He was not only an excellent dentist, but a good and kind man. We occasionally would run into him around town and he was always happy, personalable and gave a friendly greeting and exchange. We will always have nothing but fond memories of Dr. Fann.

Growing up two doors down, I knew him as Dr. Fann. I never saw him without a beaming smile on his face. He was a joy to be around - a rare gem. He will be greatly missed.

To Gaye & family,

I’m sure your hearts are very heavy with the weight of losing George. My heart goes out to you, and you are all in my prayers. May you feel the comfort of God’s mighty spirit, and be able to focus on where George is, rather than where he is not. I loved Cousin George and will miss his corny jokes at family dinners. 😊 He will be greatly missed.
