Born February 9, 1925 in Bishopville she was the daughter of the late Joseph F. Stuckey and Ruth Martin Stuckey. She was a 1946 graduate of Winthrop College and later received a business degree from Draughton’s Business College and a Master’s in Education from the University of South Carolina. She worked for Clemson Extension in Horry and Marlboro Counties, the Glens Falls Insurance Co. and retired from the University of South Carolina in 1987 after 27 years of service.
A longtime, faithful member of First Presbyterian Church, Cile was active in the Women of the Church for many years and served as its President in 1997. She was a member of the Bicentennial Committee for five years, served as an ordained Deacon and was a member of the Branches Sunday School Class.
Aunt Cile used her left foot to apply the brakes with reckless abandon, was fiercely independent and shamelessly unwasteful, used every possible opportunity to repurpose everyday items before it was trendy (or even a word), had meticulous handwriting, was a superlative gift-giver, and never forgot anybody at Christmas. For several years her feline companion was Ringo the cat, an impetuous toe-biter and arm-scratcher-upper.
She loved her crossword puzzles, her books, South Carolina history, the Presbyterian Church, her family, playing the piano and traveling. She will be remembered for her enthusiasm for life, her abiding faith and her unflagging optimism.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a brother, Joe F. Stuckey, Jr. of Fresno, California; sisters, Ruth “Martin” Stevenson and Jessie Hill “Ben” Quinn; and nephews, Gary L. Stuckey of California and James A. “Jim” Quinn of Columbia.
She is survived by nieces and nephews, Susan Stuckey Koop of Visalia, California, Steven A. Stuckey of Altadena, California, F. Elliotte Quinn III of Mt. Pleasant, Joseph Stuckey Stevenson of Goose Creek, David Lee Stevenson of Winnsboro, Ruthie Stevenson Bowman of Columbia; and her brother-in-law Frederick E. Quinn, Jr. of West Columbia.
Her family would like to thank the staff and caregivers at Laurel Crest Retirement Center, where Cile has lived for the last 14 years and also the staff at The Brian Center for their care over the past six weeks.
A memorial service will be held at Laurel Crest Retirement Center on Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 2:00 p.m. with the Chaplain Joseph M. Crump officiating.
In lieu of flowers, her family requests the memorials be made to First Presbyterian Church, 1324 Marion St., Columbia, SC 29201; The Laurel Crest Endowment Trust, 100 Joseph Walker Dr., West Columbia, SC 29169; or the Bishopville Presbyterian Church, P.O. Box 66, Bishopville, SC 29010.
