Funeral service for Hazel Nichols Hinson, 87, will be held at 12:00 noon Wednesday, June 4, 2014 at Greenlawn Baptist Church. Burial will follow in Greenlawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 10:45 until 11:45 a.m. prior to the service at the church. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel is assisting the family. Mrs. Hinson, affectionately known by “MeMa” entered God’s Kingdom Monday, June 02, 2014. Born on March 20, 1927 in Silverstreet, SC, she moved to a boarding house in Columbia in 1945. She met her husband, Dalton “Whitey” Hinson at a Square Dance in Valley Park and they were married in 1950. She retired in 1984 from Square D and was a volunteer with Providence Hospital for 26 years. A strong Christian, Mrs. Hinson was a member of Greenlawn Baptist Church from 1949 until her health declined. Her faith influenced all that she said and did in life. She served on the Homebound Ministry for many years. Hazel enjoyed years of old –fashioned square and line dancing and gathered at Bill’s Pickin’ Parlor on Friday nights. She was gifted in rooting and growing flowers for others and was known for her green thumb. If she wasn’t in her yard gardening, she was eating at S&S Café or visiting the shut-ins. She was always thinking of others, looking at life with a positive attitude. Hazel was extremely kind-hearted and will be remembered for her selfless acts and caring nature. She leaves to cherish her memory, a daughter, Debby (Ronnie) Alcorn of Irmo; grandchildren, Jeremy (Cathy) Alcorn of Irmo, Erin (Wayne) Ricottilli of Jacksonville, NC; precious great-grands, Brooke and Callie Alcorn and Katelyn and Caroline Ricottilli. Words cannot express the sorrow of her passing. She left footprints on our hearts and we will never, ever be the same. Hazel woke up in the hands of Jesus with a new body, absent of all dementia and Parkinson’s. She was predeceased by her husband, Dalton Hinson and brother, Milton Nichols. We would like to extend a special thank you for endless visits and support from our dear friends, Jane Eleazer and Nell George. Thank you to the staff at Harbison Hall for taking care of Hazel over the past 14 months and most recently thank you to Lutheran Hospice. Memorials may be made to Greenlawn Baptist Church, 6612 Garner’s Ferry Road, Columbia, SC 29209.
