James Bernard Sloan, 83, of Chapin, SC died May 3, 2016 after an extended illness. He was born to the late Eula Rae (Sligh) and George D. Sloan on January 13, 1933, in Columbia, SC. He graduated from Columbia High School in 1951, and received a BA degree in Business from the University of South Carolina in 1955. He served as a member of the U.S. Army and the Army National Guard. He married the love of his life, the late Eva Anne Owen Sloan in 1956. Mr. Sloan was an insurance adjuster from 1956 to 1967. He then followed his wife's dream of owning a school based on teaching children in a personal and individualized setting. In 1968, "Mr. Jim", as he was affectionately called by the students, and Eva Anne opened Sloan's School. After 42 successful, fulfilling years, Sloan's School closed its doors in 2010. In his earlier days, JB enjoyed coaching Pee Wee and Little League baseball. He liked to go camping and fishing at Santee, the Florida Keys and of course his beautiful backyard, Lake Murray. He loved to tell incredible (sometimes questionable) stories of his youth and experiences growing up on his Daddy's farm which ran along what is now Greystone Blvd. all the way down to the Saluda River.
He answered to many names: Mr. Jim, JB, Jimmy, "Lunk", "Big Man", but, most importantly, Dad and Granddaddy. JB was the youngest of six children and was predeceased by his siblings, the late George Allen Sloan, William Howard Sloan, Katherine Sloan Raysor, Doris Sloan Stephens and Mildred Sloan Grugan. He is survived by his three boys: J. Michael (Vicki) Sloan of Chapin, SC, Randall Owen (Jennie) Sloan of Versailles, Kentucky, and Troy Dawson (Tina) Sloan of Irmo, SC. He is survived by his granddaughter, Cristina Cathleen Sloan of Irmo, SC; his sister- in-law, Euenla Hancock (George) Sloan; brothers-in-law, Bob (Debra) Owen, Chan (Cathy) Owen and a multitude of loving nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his extended family who JB loved as his own, Becky and Steve Wilmes and Jeff, Stephanie and Lauren Herring.
The funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, May 6, 2016, at the Lowman Home Chapel in White Rock. The family will receive visitors one hour prior to the funeral service in the chapel from 12 to 1:00 p.m. Burial will immediately follow the service in Greenlawn Memorial Park.
The family wishes to thank the administration, staff and hospice team at the Heritage at Lowman for the kind, caring and professional attention they gave JB and his family during his illness and stay at the Lowman Home. The family is asking that any donations be made to Carolina Wildlife Care, 5551 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 or Pets Inc., 300 Orchard Drive, West Columbia, 29170.
