Little Mountain - John Herbert Ferguson, M.D., 66, husband of 43 years to Debra (Debbie) Clement Ferguson, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his family Thursday, August 19. He was born in Abbeville, SC to the late June Price Ferguson and Herbert Harris Ferguson.
John graduated from Wofford College and the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed his residency in Family Medicine in Greenville, SC. He practiced 36 of his 40 years in Family Medicine at the Pinner Clinic in Peak, SC. He was respected by his colleagues, nurses, staff and loved by his patients for his compassion, diligence, understanding and sense of humor. He was also a member of the Medical University of South Carolina College of Medicine Alumni Board of Directors, where he continued to serve as mentor and clinical instructor to medical students until his retirement in October 2020.
In addition to being a family physician, John loved music, the outdoors and cycling. He was an avid bicyclist and could be found on his bicycle at every opportunity. He also enjoyed camping, hiking and backpacking.
Dr. Ferguson was a member of Lake Murray Presbyterian Church where he served as an elder, as a member of the Missions Committee and as a member of the Jesus Seekers Sunday School Class. He was the Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 411 for 27 years. He felt it was an honor and privilege to be entrusted with the care and lives of so many young people. As Scoutmaster, he guided 103 young men to attain the rank of Eagle Scout and led 9 crews to Philmont Scout Ranch in Cimarron, NM. He was proud of every scout and their accomplishments.
In addition to his wife, Debbie, John is survived by his son, John Matthew Ferguson, M.D. (Lisa Marie) of Mount Pleasant, SC, and his daughter, Kiri Ferguson Willis (Andy) of Spartanburg, SC. He was “Papa” to his five adoring grandchildren and the joys of his life: Jack Harris Ferguson, Charles O’Neil Ferguson and Thomas Cooper Ferguson of Mount Pleasant, and Madison Frances Willis and Lucas Edward Willis of Spartanburg. He is also survived by his brother, Michael Craig Ferguson (Catherine), of Williamston SC, and his brother-in-law, Charles Winfred Clement, Jr. (Rebecca) of Nicholson, GA as well as many nieces and nephews.
John’s family would like to extend their appreciation to all of you: patients, friends, church members, scouts, and the community for your continuous support this past year. We would like to thank you for all the kind words and loving messages.
A private service will be held for family and close friends at Lake Murray Presbyterian Church with a graveside service at the Mount Hermon Lutheran Church Cemetery (Peak Cemetery) to follow. Memorials may be made to the Lake Murray Presbyterian Church Missions.
May the greatest Scoutmaster of all time be with you until we meet again.
