Joseph Anthony Brannigan Jr., age 69, of Chapin South Carolina, passed away on July 7th, 2023. He was born February 3rd, 1954 in Washington DC, eldest son of Joseph Brannigan Sr. and Therese Delaney Brannigan.

After his primary education at Our Lady of Good Counsel, Our Lady of Fatima, St. Joseph Central High School, and Irmo High School, Joe attended The University of South Carolina with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. He then attended the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his MD in 1981. He completed his residency at the University of Virginia Affiliated Hospitals in internal medicine, and a fellowship in Nephrology at the University of Florida. After completing his fellowship, Joe returned to South Carolina and started his career as a nephrologist at Columbia Nephrology Associates where he practiced until December 2022.
Joe never accepted things as they were, he always believed that he could make them better. He became the president of CNA, quadrupled the size of the group and diversified the business of CNA. He was a founding member of Carolina Kidney Alliance, as well as the president of the South Carolina Kidney Foundation. Not only was he a highly skilled physician, but he also always pursued other ventures related to the medical field that might improve the lives of his patients and his nephrology partners. He retired from clinical practice 6 months ago to devote all his efforts to an exciting new venture with his longtime friend David Mahvi called Carolina Kidney Partners. Throughout his entire career, Joe kept close relationships with his patients, they were the inspiration for all the change he hoped to make in the medical field.
Joe was outgoing and he loved to talk to everyone, regardless of the topic. He was a man of many stories, some which may have been “embellished”. However, these stories will never be forgotten by the people he shared them with. He was an amazing father and husband, a beloved friend, colleague, teacher, and mentor to countless people; as well as a cappuccino lover and the best person to have on your trivia team. Joe loved golfing with his group of friends, boating, working on becoming a grill master, and spending time with family and friends. His love of life was infectious. He impacted the people in his life beyond measure. His passing will leave a gap in the hearts of many.
