Judy Lynn Brazell was born on the 12 of May, 1963 to Lorene and Joy Lea (J.L.) Brazell in Albuquerque, New Mexico. She graduated from El Dorado High School in 1981, and went on to graduate from Oklahoma Christian University in 1985 with a Bachelor of Science in Medical Technology. After her undergraduate degree, she completed the Specialist in Blood Bank Technology certification program at the Sacramento Blood Center in 1992. After many years working in the medical industry, including time spent at the American Red Cross, Judy went back to school and received a Master of Arts in Clinical Counseling from Columbia International University in 2015.
Judy's early career is indicative of her indomitable spirit, her keen sense of justice, and her commitment to preserving the dignity of each person her life touched. She worked extensively in the medical field, doing lab work as well as regulatory development. During her time at the American Red Cross, she worked to overhaul a number of Red Cross operational practices, and was instrumental in the Red Cross's efforts to institute comprehensive corrective and preventative action plans to ensure safety for its donors and recipients. These changes helped the Red Cross establish the reputation it has today as one of the USA's foremost and safest providers of plasma services.
Judy's professional trajectory and personal life were both characterized by what friends and family will remember as her fierce and caring spirit. From the lab to the supermarket, Judy wholeheartedly embraced the Southern ethos of hospitality. Friends, family, and felines were all regularly welcomed and entertained both in her South Carolina home as well as across the globe. During her time working as a quality consultant, Judy traveled extensively, as evidenced by the steady flow of pictures, notes, and gifts into the homes of her wide network of loved ones.
Judy loved widely and well. She is preceded into death by her father, J.L. Brazell. She leaves behind her mother, Lorene Brazell, brother Darrell Brazell (Debbie), nieces Grace and June Brazell, grand-niece Everest 'Eevee' Pratte, all of Lawrence, Kansas, and her found family Sereta, Lisa, Rena, and Crissy Muse. In addition, Judy will be missed by the 'Sisters of the Midnight Ride,' and the many and varied characters who work and have worked in the Lexington Medical laboratories. She leaves behind two cats, Crowfeather and Bramby.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, April 5, 2025 at Emmaus Church, 160 Bush River Rd, Columbia 29212.
