

Laurel Sherman Englehart (Laurie), passed away peacefully on Saturday June 20, 2026 at the age of 75. Laurie was born on November 27, 1950, the oldest daughter of two, to Marty and Ruth Sherman, in Honolulu, Hawaii. Laurie graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Work from Tulane University in New Orleans, Louisiana, and earned her Master's in Social Work from the University of Hawaii. She met Kevin Englehart in 1974, and were married in 1978. They had two sons, Jeremy, 42, and David, 36.
Laurie lived in Irmo for 46 years and enjoyed her time with her children and grandchildren, along with many cats and dogs. She dedicated her career to social work and worked for the Lexington/Richland Alcohol & Drug Abuse Council for 34 years, finally retiring in 2013. Laurie loved to go to movies, try new restaurants, and travel. She especially loved her many trips to Disney World which she shared with friends and family. She was even known by friends as Minnie Mouse. Laurie was a loving, giving and compassionate woman who was more than once voted in as Counselor of the Year through the South Carolina Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council. She worked tirelessly in women’s intensive outpatient treatment and her patients loved and respected her. Laurie was a big animal-lover and loved to laugh and to be entertained. Her good nature and warm heart were infectious and she will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved her.
Laurie is survived by her sons, Jeremy and David (Katelyn), and her grandchildren, Ayden and Lydia Ruth, her sister Susan Kitakis (John) and their children Noah, Ketra, Jessa & Andrew. She also leaves behind her sweet canine children, Louie and Jedi. Visitation will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home in Irmo at 7600 Woodrow Street, Monday, June 29th at 11:00 AM, followed by a Celebration of Life at Jeremy and David’s father’s house.
