A celebration of life service will be held for Louis Theodore Pontikas, 70, at 11 o’clock on Saturday, August 1, 2020 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 – 11:00am one hour before the service at the funeral home. Social distancing will be maintained and masks will be available. In addition, the service will be livestreamed on Facebook under Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. A private entombment will be held at a later date in Albemarle, NC.

Lou passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family in the early morning of Tuesday, July 28, 2020 from a courageous battle with cancer. Lou was born in Newark, New Jersey to Theodore Louis and Josephine Passarella Pontikas. In 1968, he graduated from Nutley High School, Nutley NJ, where he excelled in baseball. In 1973, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in business administration from William Paterson University in Wayne, NJ. He moved to South Carolina as a salesman with the Nestle Corporation soon thereafter.

In 1984, he began his career as an investment advisor with Bankers Trust which was ultimately merged with Merrill Lynch. Lou retired from Merrill Lynch after a 35-year career where he achieved a role as Senior Vice President. He loved talking with his clients and staying current with the news surrounding the stock market. When he was not talking about the market though, he was talking about his children and family.

Lou is survived by his wife of 30 years, Patricia Oettinger Pontikas; his daughter, Alexandra Leigh Pontikas of Charlotte, NC; his son, Matthew Louis Pontikas of Charlotte, NC; his sister, Susan Pontikas Burgess (Lenny) of Cliffwood Beach, NJ; and another sister, Mary Pontikas Petrasek (Bob) of Montague, NJ. He is predeceased by an older sister, Evelyn Pontikas Pelais (Joey) of Nutley, NJ.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Lou’s memory to Cornerstone Presbyterian Church, 5637 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212 or Sharing God’s Love, 147 Friarsgate Blvd, Irmo, SC 29063.

May God bless all the family and friends who have offered prayers and shown love and concern during this time of loss.

Dear Patty, Alex and Matt,
We were so sorry to hear that you've lost your husband and father. This is such a difficult time for you all. We hope that you can remember the love that he gave you all over the years. Looking at the photos we could see that love and how proud he was of all of you. Perhaps remembering the experiences you've had will help to ease some of the pain of that loss. Know that care deeply for you and wish we could give you a big hug. Sending you our love.

While I did not know Lou personally, the video of him is a wonderful tribute and I would still like to extend my condolences to Patti and the Pontikas family. I worked with Patti many years ago when I was in the banking industry and a former co-worker told me about this just today. My thoughts and prayers are with you all. God bless!

Our deepest sympathy to Patty and the children. We remember Lou and the family from so many years ago at Cornerstone Presbyterian. What a joy it has been to see your faces again in services prior to the quarantine.. We have prayed that the Lord would heal Lou and for the family as you were the Lord’s earthly hands to serve Lou during his illness. As God’s plan was different, we now rejoice that Lou is now with our Savior and that all of us who believe in Christ will be reunited one day. Our love to Patty and the family.

Patty,
Please accept my condolences. I played golf with Lou and Bob Cantrell and always enjoyed Lou’s company. As a former Jersey boy myself, Lou brought back a lot of good memories.
He was always a fun golf partner and, in the last year, an inspiration of what can be done in the face of adversity with a positive attitude.

Mr. Pontikas was a man among men. He was a true Christian and loved his family more than words could ever tell. His character and honesty were above reproach. If he told you something you could bet your life on it. I think back on all the conversations we had at baseball games and relish those talks. He was great!
Patti, Alex and Matt, our sincere prayers go out to you. In you he has left a fine legacy. He was so proud of his family...I expect that when he meets our Father in Heaven , He will say to Lou, “Well done thou good and faithful servant.”
