

COLUMBIA - Lyla M. Eggleston of Jenkinsville, SC passed away peacefully on September 4, 2024, at the age of 78. Born in Springfield, IL as Lyla Mardell Brown on August 12, 1946, she was the second daughter of Loren E. and Lola M. Brown. She grew up as a farm girl near Cantrall Illinois and was a popular student who participated in everything from 4H and band to cheerleading and chorus.
She worked several careers beginning at Sangamo Electric in Springfield and ending in South Carolina as an IT systems expert for Schlumberger.
Lyla was a loving wife to Don Eggleston, who was the love of her life and the focus of her being. They enjoyed 36 years of marriage together, and she cared for him until his passing just four years ago. In their mutual retirement, Lyla helped Don in his fishing tour business called “The Captain’s Quarters.” They loved to work together. They were both avid boating enthusiasts. She helped Don in his administration of the Sub Vets Palmetto Base Columbia South Carolina group as well.
Lyla’s selfless spirit was on display when she brought Don’s parents into their home and cared for them, building a special house to keep his parents in their home. She accepted the role of raising the youngest of Don’s two sons by consistently showing love and leadership.
Known for her bubbly and talkative personality, she loved to talk and could speak very fast. She was constantly updating decorations and creating new displays in their home. She loved photography and was excellent in composing photographs.
In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her older sister, Myrna Golay (Brown). She is survived by her step-children, Lee Eggleston (Debra), Timothy Eggleston (Christina); and step-grandchildren, Scott and Don Eggleston and other family. She is also survived by her siblings, Gary Brown (Jill), Byron Brown (Nancy), and Craig Brown (Donna); along with numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 12:00 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2024 at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel. The family will receive friends from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. Thursday, September 19, 2024, at the funeral home. Burial will be at 2:00 p.m. at the Fort Jackson National Cemetery.
