Mary Nichols

Columbia, SC. Mary Frances Tollner Nichols died August 16, 2026 at the Village at Summerville.

Born in Charleston, SC on August 25, 1933, she was the daughter of the late John Rudolph William and Frances Flathmann Tollner.

Mary was a 1954 honor graduate of the College of Charleston. She married the late George Henry Nichols, Jr. in 1954 and was a steadfast military and chaplain's spouse while raising their three children in multiple U.S. cities as well as Japan.

Mary was a devoted member of Windsor United Methodist Church. She also was an avid reader and an accomplished bridge player, but her greatest joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Mary is survived by her children John Nichols (Cheryl), Ruth Hopkins, and James Nichols (Susan), as well as 10 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren.

Interment will be at Fort Jackson National Cemetery, 4170 Pervical Road, Columbia, SC 29229 on Monday, August 31, 2026 at 11:00AM. The family wishes to thank the compassionate caregivers at the Village at Summerville.
