She was the daughter of the late Charles Lester Edwards, Sr. and Hazel Henrietta Mayes Edwards. She was the wife of the late Jack Edwin Steele, Jr.
Kate is survived by her children, Judy Carol Steele Black and her husband Tom Black of Greenwood, Arkansas, and Jack Edwin Steele, III of Woodstock, Georgia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brandon Steele, Christopher Steele, Allison Steele, all of Woodstock, Georgia; and sister-in-law, Sarah Edwards. She was preceded in death by brothers, Charles L. Edwards, Jr. and James “Jim” Richard Edwards.
She was born June 4, 1939 in Charlotte, NC and was graduate of Harding High School. Kate worked was an administrative assistant at St. Andrew’s Baptist Church in Columbia and also a homemaker.
Her claim to fame was the self-nomination as Queen Bee of the Ancient Irmese Red Hat Society for many years and organizing fun events. She was always full of life and enjoyed special times with her friends of church and Red Hats. Picnics at Pine Island were filled with laughter and tons of hugs.
Kate accepted Jesus Christ as her Eternal Savior, was blessed to be married to a man of faith, and was a member of Riverland Hills Baptist Church.
A funeral service will be conducted by the Reverend Dr. Timothy Phillips and will be held at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, South Carolina at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 30, 2019, with a visitation preceding the service at 10:00 am.
A committal service and burial will be held at Bush River Memorial Gardens, 5400 Bush River Road, Columbia, South Carolina 29212. Memorials may be made to: Riverland Hills Baptist Church, 201 Lake Murray Boulevard, Irmo, South Carolina 29063.
