
Mayer L. Johnson, 90, died Friday, October 10, 2014, at the Heritage at Lowman. He was born in Kinards, SC, son of George W. and Katie Dreher Johnson. He was a life member of Sharon Methodist Church in Kinards and an associate member of Washington Street Methodist Church in Columbia. Always an A student, he attended Clinton High School and Furman University. He was a retired state employee from the Office of Accounting at the University of South Carolina. Mr. Johnson had a great love of travel and toured many countries throughout the world. His sense of adventure took him to the Greek Islands, and his sense of fun found him enjoying Disney World with family members. He also loved attending plays and operas in New York City and reading all books, especially poetry. A patron of the arts, he was also a member of the Columbia Drama Club. He enjoyed photography, listening to classical music, growing flowers, and watching the Carolina Gamecocks play football. His happiest times were spent with his family to whom he was loyally devoted and whom he considered his greatest blessing. He enjoyed having breakfast with his “Bojangles” buddies as well as touring the state with his traveling buddies looking for new and interesting places for lunch and sightseeing. He was a generous and caring person, who had a host of very good friends. Mr. Johnson was the last surviving member of six siblings: Louise Johnson Lathrop, Ansel Johnson, Champ Johnson, Ruby Johnson Sharpe, Nell Johnson Livingston, and Mary Johnson Cromer. He is survived by a host of nieces and nephews. Visitation will be from 2:00-3:00 P.M. on Sunday, October 12, 2014, at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, 7600 Woodrow Street, Irmo, SC. Funeral services, conducted by The Reverend John Trump, will be at 3:00 P.M. at the funeral home. Private interment will immediately follow in the Rosemont Cemetery, 2699 College Street, Newberry, SC.
