Patricia Tate Bennett
August 11, 1945 – June 26, 2018
Patricia "Pat" Tate Bennett, of Columbia, SC, formerly of Christiansburg, VA, passed away to our Heavenly Father on Tuesday, June 26, 2018 after a prolonged and very courageous battle with cancer. She was born on August 11, 1945 near Charleston, WV, and was preceded in death by her father, Sherman Andrew Tate, mother, Janice Marie Blake, husband, John Ballard Bennett and brother James "Jim" Tate.
Pat worked for more than 20 years at Virginia Tech, and retired in early 2008. She enjoyed gardening and reading and was an avid Hokie football fan. Her two grandsons were the light of her life and she was like a second mother to them. Pat made people laugh wherever she went and she had a close circle of friends in her neighborhood who were dear to her in the last years of her life.
Left to cherish her memory are her son and daughter-in-law, Kevin and Tiffany Bennett of Irmo, SC; daughter, Michelle Bennett of Marion, VA; beloved grandsons, Cody and Zeke Bennett, both of Irmo, SC; brother, Gary Tate, of Easley, SC; sister and brother-in-law Nancy and Charles Hodges of Clifton Forge, VA; sister-in-law Karen Tate, and several special nieces and nephews and their children.
A memorial visitation will be held on Thursday, June 28, 2018 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM at Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel in Irmo, SC. An additional memorial reception will be held at the Belmont Christian Church Fellowship Hall, 2149 Dominion Drive Christiansburg, VA 24073, at 1:00 PM on Saturday, August 11, 2018, which would have been Pat's 73rd birthday. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the SCOA Cares Foundation, 166 Stoneridge Drive Columbia, SC 29210.

So sorry to hear of Ms. Bennett's passing. As a neighbor of hers, I would walk my dog by her house almost every day and wave to her and she would always wave back. I only spoke to her a couple of times, but knew that she was a special lady. My sympathies are extended to her family during this time.

I enjoyed working together with Pat for a handful of years in the College of Arts and Sciences (at VT). She was always so excited to tell stories about her family, expressing so much love for them. I know you were her world. For her family, I pray for strength and peace as you walk thru this heartache. Sherry Hazelwood

I loved "Patsy" so much, we have been friends since junior high school. We had some great times at school and just in life. I will miss just knowing she was there in South Carolina even if I couldn't get to her. We had talked about getting together and now that will have to wait till we are both in Heaven. Our birthdays were two days apart so we also shared that special bond. I will very much miss her.
