He was a graduate of Lower Richland High School. After marrying his sweetheart, Patricia Juanita Kull, he was activated with the Air National Guard and was stationed in Spain during the Cuban Missile Crisis. They enjoyed their travels, the unique places they were able to visit and the people they met.
Paul worked and retired as a salesman with Resource Electronics formerly known as Dixie Electronics in Columbia, SC. He always had many stories of his customers and the places across the state he got to visit on his weekly sales journeys.
Paul and Patricia both enjoyed spending time with family at their home and their place at the beach. They were members of Chapin Baptist Church for many years.
Paul is survived by his sons, Paul E. Thompson, III (Ronda) and James S. Thompson (Susan); grandchildren, Shelby E. McDowell (Seth), Sydney M. Thompson and Brandon M. Thompson; great-granddaughter, Callie E. McDowell; brother, William “Billy” Thompson (Linda); sister-in-law, Faye Thompson; numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, brother Wade Thompson, aunt Stella Cain and uncle Stafford Thompson.
Paul will definitely be missed by his precious Shih Tzu, Izzy, who could usually be found laying beside him in his recliner. She loved having him pet her, carry her around and give her treats.
Many thanks from the family for the care Paul received while at Generations of Irmo-Memory Care and also a special thank you to his personal care givers while he previously was at home.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Chapin United Methodist Church Cemetery, with visitation following the service.
