
LEXINGTON - A Memorial Service for Lt. Riley G. Hammond, US Navy (Ret.), 89, will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 17, 2016 at First Baptist Church of Lexington, 415 Barr Road, Lexington, S.C. 29072.
Mr. Hammond died Wednesday, July 13, 2016. Born in Richland County, S.C., he was the son of the late Chester Everette and Ella Brazel Hammond Oliver. A 30 year veteran of the US Navy, he served during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. He was a diver and a member of the EOD team.
Mr. Hammond was given the name “Poppy” by his grandson, Guy Lipscomb and together they enjoyed fishing and camping. He also enjoyed motor home camping with his wife, Frances. He will be remembered for being headstrong, organized, brilliant, and kind. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Lexington.
Surviving are his wife of 24 years, Frances Derrick Hammond; son, Riley Hammond, Jr. of Fountain Inn, S.C.; stepdaughters, Paula H. Elliott of Beaufort, S.C., Pam H. Sosler of Ohio and Leisa H. Lipscomb of Gilbert, S.C.; sister, Bernice Grant of Chapin, S.C.; ten grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his daughter, Mollie Sue Harrison; stepdaughter, Pat H. Kephart; and sister, Louise Crowder.
The family would like to give a special thanks to the “A” Team of caregivers who, in spite of sometimes being “fired” daily, provided love and care to Riley over the past several years. They are now our family and we love them more than words can say. Thank you, Cathy Harris, Tammy Jamison, and Stephanie “Nita” Smalls for all of your patience and love during the good and the bad. Also, thanks go to Dr. Jeffrey Hook and Palmetto Hospice for their outstanding assistance.
