Shirley Lee Coleman

September 24, 1938February 28, 2018

Shirley Lee Coleman, 79, of Titusville, Fla., formerly of Lexington, S. C., passed away on the afternoon of February 28 in Titusville, FL. Born in Columbia, SC. she was the daughter of the late Feaster S. Coleman, Sr. and Ruby Counts Coleman of Lake Murray, SC. Shirley graduated in 1956 from Eau Claire High School where she was a majorette, and later attended the University of South Carolina. Shirley loved to dance and as a teenager learned the Carolina Shag in Myrtle Beach. She became a ballroom dance instructor for Author Murray Studios in the late 1950's. Her chosen vocation was accounting and she was a dedicated employee of the Columbia accounting firm of Rogers and Laban for 32 years, retiring in 2003. She was head of the small business section at the firm and took great pride in being able to help clients with complex tax requirements. She had a special interest in history and genealogy becoming an expert in tracing and documenting her ancestry. Nature was another passion of hers and after retirement she became a wildlife rehabilitator with the Carolina Wildlife Center in Irmo, SC where she was known as "The Bunny Lady" for her work raising orphaned rabbits. She also volunteered as a "turtle lady" with the Edisto Beach Loggerhead Turtle Project protecting and rescuing the endangered animals along Edisto Beach. Family was sacred to her as evidenced by the emphasis she placed on being a good mother, a loving daughter, and a faithful sister and aunt. She is survived by her son, Ronald E. Chicone, Jr. (Lara) of Titusville, Fla., her brothers Feaster S. Coleman (Gay) of Bryson City, NC and Preston H. Coleman (Marla) of Chapin, SC, as well as numerous nephews and a niece. Graveside services will be held on Sunday, March 4, 2018 at two o’clock at Dutch Fork Baptist Church cemetery. Visitation will follow at the graveside. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, Shirley would value donations to Carolina Wildlife Center, 5551 Bush River Road, Columbia, SC 29212, or to the Coleman Feaster Mobley Association, 167 Rutledge Road, Greenwood, SC 29649-8992 (CO: Teddi M. Miles). A special thank you to the outstanding ladies at Southern Living of Titusville Assisted Living for the loving care given to Shirley. Please sign the online guestbook at

To Preston and Marla, and family, I am so sorry for your loss. Although I did not know your sister, she seemed like a great person. I know she certainly accomplished a lot in her life. I love you two and will keep you in my thoughts and prayers during this sad time❣️🙏

Sending our deepest sympathies Ronnie. She was so beautiful and have many happy memories as a child. I remember coloring easter eggs together and painting our nails. She taught me to knit. I remember her making cocoa and ice skating on a frozen pond. Swimming and sking on the lake in SC. Always wished I could have seen her again...
