Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Thursday, May 20, 2021 at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Columbia with burial to follow in Bush River Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends from noon until 2:00 p.m. prior to the service at the church.
A native of Columbia, Walter was born on December 29, 1931 to Walter and Helen Younge Hennies. He served his country proudly in the United States Air Force during the Korean War. Walter retired from S.C. Employment Security Systems as a Program Supervisor, where he oversaw federal manpower programs. Prior to retirement, he was named an Honorary Kentucky Colonel. He was an active member of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, where he was past President of the church council, Sunday School Teacher, a S.C. Lutheran Synod Outreach Committee member and was a member of the USC associates. Walter enjoyed traveling in both the U.S. and Europe and attending USC football games. Walter’s servant’s heart led him to volunteer for many years with Meals on Wheels and Harvest Hope. He was a member of the American Legion and President of the Cottages of White Hall’s Neighborhood Association.
In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sisters, Helen Hennies and Lucy Behles. Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Carolyn R. Hennies; a daughter, Laurie Hennies Seel; a granddaughter, Maggie Seel Baber (Pastor Ben); a grandson, Alex Seel (Erin); three great-grandchildren, Blanton Baber, Briggs Baber, Jonah Seel; a sister, Fae Williams; a brother- in- law, Alfred Behles; a sister and brother-in-law, Gloria Bryan and Phil Bryan; and a host of nieces and nephews.
The family wishes to extend heartfelt thanks to his caregivers throughout the years at the Lowman Home and Generations of Irmo.
