Born in Brooklyn, NY, Walt moved to NJ where he lived for more than 40 years before relocating to Irmo, SC in 2004.
Walter proudly served his country in the United States Navy as a communications engineer during the Korean War. Following his military service, he enjoyed a long career as an escalator mechanic with New York City Local One, where he became known for his exceptional mechanical ability, and dedication.
Walter shared 53 wonderful years of marriage with the love of his life, Barbara. Together they built a family that became his greatest joy.
He is survived by his loving daughter, Donna Cronin; his grandchildren, Shannon and Jeff Piassek, Matthew Selby, Brittany Lestrange; John and Dyana Cronin, and Luke Selby; his great-grandchildren, Lily, JJ and Joie. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Barbara, his daughter, Debra; and his granddaughter, Danielle.
He was a faithful member of Hope Lutheran Church in Irmo. Walter found strength in his faith and treasured the friendships he made through his church family.
Walter was a lifelong New York Yankees fan. Family plans were often made around the Yankees’ schedule, and everyone knew not to interrupt a game. He also loved the ocean, where he found peace and happiness. He had a special place in his heart for his beloved dog, Charlee, who was his constant companion and best friend, bringing him endless comfort and joy.
He will be remembered for his infectious optimism, his striking blue eyes, and his incredible sense of humor. Walter had a remarkable gift for making people smile and laugh. One of his signature traditions was turning almost anything into a “Roses are red, violets are blue…” rhyme. Whether clever, heartfelt, or hilariously off-the-cuff, his little poems became one of the many ways he showed his love and brought joy to everyone around him. Even in his final days, he was still making up his famous rhymes and leaving his family laughing—a gift they will cherish forever.
To those who knew him, Walter was simply one of those rare people everyone loved. He had a gentle spirit, a generous heart, and an unwavering willingness to help anyone. Above all, he loved his family deeply and made everyone around him feel welcomed and cared for. He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, kindness, and service. His family will forever remember the man who could fix anything, brighten any room with a joke, and turn every moment into a “Roses are red, violets are blue…” poem. His memory will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know and love him.
In keeping with Walter’s wishes, no funeral services will be held. Those wishing to honor his memory may make a donation in his name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
