The family will receive friends at the church following the service. Dunbar Funeral Home, Dutch Fork Chapel, Irmo, is assisting the family. Mr. Mackie passed away peacefully on Friday, December 4, 2015, at his home in Chapin. Bill was born on September 11, 1942, in Winston-Salem, N.C. to the late William Marshall Mackie and Dorothy Lawson Mackie. He graduated from Reynolds High School and Wake Forest University. He also earned a Master of Counseling degree from Indiana University. Bill served as Associate Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at Wake Forest University from 1963 to 1974. During that time, he married his first love, the late Janet Bullock Mackie, grew his trademark mustache, and became a father to two wonderful sons. The family moved to Columbia, S.C. in 1974 when Bill founded the South Carolina Student Loan Corporation (SCSLC). He served as President and CEO of the SCSLC until his retirement in 2005, and continued to serve on its Board of Directors until his death. Bill was a sharp businessman who led with integrity and a strong sense of service. In 1996, he was recognized for his dedication to the parents and students of South Carolina with the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian honor awarded by the State. Bill was a mentor, a passionate coach and a true friend. He was a welcome sight on athletic fields and in board rooms. Most notable was his character, which combined gentleness with firmness, compassion with fairness, and open-mindedness with decisiveness. Bill shared his intellectual gifts on the Board of Directors of the National Council of Higher Education Loan Programs, the Education Finance Council, ELM Resources, the National Student Loan Clearinghouse and the South Carolina Cancer Center. He was also a faithful member of Saint Mary’s Episcopal Church and served on the vestry for many years. Bill, known to the family as “Pop,” is survived by his loving and devoted wife of 13 years, June Cooley Mackie; son and daughter-in-law, Brent and Susan Mackie and their children, Mellette, Josh and Lucy of Myrtle Beach, S.C.; son and daughter-in-law, Collin and Cammie Mackie and their children, Clare and Drew of Greenville, S.C.; stepdaughter, Jeanette Mangles and stepson, Jeffery Mangles of Columbia, S.C.; brother and sister-in-law, Jeff and Florence Mackie of Hickory, N.C.; his “quarterback” in all things, Jim Mattox, and Jim’s wife, Nancy of Winston-Salem, N.C.; as well as cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he treasured. Bill will also be missed by many dear friends who were steadfast with loyalty. We will smile and remember Pop always, especially when we play tennis or golf, listen to beach music, sit by the ocean with our feet in the sand, travel to interesting cities, and watch the Gamecocks or his Demon Deacons play football. Memorials may be sent to Saint Mary's Episcopal Church, Bill Mackie Memorial Fund, 170 St. Andrews Road, Columbia, SC 29210.
