

Darlene Dungy Hughes (83) passed away peacefully on Saturday December 16, 2023, at Jackson County Medical Care Facility with family at her side. Visitation with family is Wednesday, December 20,2023 from 4:00 – 7:00 pm at Burden & Patience-Montgomery Funeral Home, 1806 East Michigan Avenue, Jackson, MI 49202. The celebration of life will be held on Thursday, December 21, 2023. Viewing from 11:00 – 11:45 am, service at 12:00 pm, at Second Baptist Missionary Church, 304 E Prospect St, Jackson, MI 49203. Darlene was a devoted Christian and faithful member of Berean Bible Baptist Church. She was an avid sports fan, and her greatest joy came from spending time with family, especially while playing board games. Darlene was the seventh born to Fanchion (Monroe) Dungy and Alvie Dungy Sr in Jackson, MI on August 7, 1940. Darlene was survived by daughters Sheryl Hughes, Synthia Hughes, Sonya Hughes (Marianne Butcher) and son Christopher Hughes (Wanda Sota), four cherished grandchildren (Justin aka “Justy”, Christopher aka “Dee”, Careen aka “Reen”, and Ryan aka “Ryan Man”) and four great-grandchildren, “GG’s babies,” (Janene aka “Nene”, Sky aka “Shy Babie”, Ava aka “Miss Thing”, and Avery aka “Mister Man”). Darlene is also survived by sisters Fanchion Janet Smith, Toni Dungy and brother Darrow (Sheila) Dungy, several nieces, nephews and cousins. Preceded in death by ex-husband of 35 years Willie Hughes, brothers, Alive Dungy Jr, Kenneth Dungy, Ronald Dungy and sisters Mildred Owens, and Oveda Fowler. Darlene loved her profession as a Registered Nurse following an ADN degree from Jackson Community College, a BSN from the University of Michigan, and MBA post-graduate study at Central Michigan University. For 35 years Darlene enjoyed working as a nurse at the Department of Corrections (Jackson) and per diem nursing at Foote Hospital Allegiance. The family expresses their gratitude to the staff of JCMCF for their comfort and empathetic care shown to their mom.
