David Martin Kirk

David was born on May 24, 1943, in Harrisville, West Virginia, to Forrest and Alberta (Elder) Kirk. He was the oldest child in a large family and carried throughout his life the values of responsibility, hard work, and caring for others.

A proud American and a man dedicated to service, Dave proudly served his country in the United States Air Force as a Military Police member with the Strategic Air Command, achieving the rank of Sergeant. His commitment to serving others continued throughout his life and was reflected in everything he did.

Dave was a skilled Master Electrician and retired from Hayes Albion Corporation and the Veterans Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. He was known as the person everyone could count on. He was always ready to help a family member, friend, or even a stranger — whether it was providing a ride day or night, solving an electrical problem, or simply lending a helping hand. Dave took great pride in being a provider and made sure those he loved were always cared for and never went without.

In the 1970s, Dave was a member of a CB club, where he was known by his handle, “Blue Knight.” The name fit him perfectly. He was always ready to assist anyone who needed help, and many remember him arriving in his blue Jeep, ready to lend a hand.

Dave grew up on a farm and had a lifelong love and deep compassion for animals. He was a true advocate for all creatures and was especially fond of horses, dogs, and cats. He was preceded in death by many beloved fur babies who held a special place in his heart.

Dave enjoyed the simple routines and friendships that made life special. Many mornings, you could find him at Bob Evans on West Avenue at 7:00 a.m. sharp, where he became a familiar and cherished friend to many. He treasured those friendships, especially his waitress, Robin, who always treated him like royalty.

Dave is survived by his significant other, Linda Taylor; his daughter, Amy L. (Dr. Donald) Jones; and his son, Ryan D. Kirk (Jill Smith). He also leaves behind his beloved grandchildren: William Versluys (Casey Hargis), Joseph Versluys (Reilly Kofflin), Amanda Versluys (Michael Bennett-Norman), Emily Pettit (Eric Pettit), and Savanna Osterholm; 11 great-grandchildren; his siblings; and many extended family members and friends who will forever remember his kindness, loyalty, humor, and generous spirit.

Dave entered the gates of Heaven after being lovingly and respectfully cared for by his daughter, Amy; Nurse Lauren; CNA Bobbi; and Dr. J. Yalavarthi of Heart to Heart Hospice. His family would also like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Cascade Senior Center for the compassionate care they provided during his rehabilitation stay.

Dave lived a life of service — to his country, his family, his friends, and all living creatures. His legacy will live on through the many lives he touched and the kindness he shared so freely.

David was cremated according to his wishes. Family and friends will gather for a Celebration of Life with Military Honors on Friday, August 14, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. at Hillcrest Memorial Park, 1425 N. Elm Street, Jackson, Michigan 49202.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to Cascades Humane Society would be appreciated.
