Of Jackson, passed away March 18, 2019, age 76. Survived by her sister, Diana Kleiner; close friends, Angela Vlaicu and Patti Redmond. She received her BA in English and General Science at Oregon State University and received her PhD in English at University of Chicago. She taught Technical Writing at Indiana State University, Jackson Community College, and online for DeVry University. Elaine was a gifted writer and a brilliant conversationalist. She authored two books of poetry, This Sacred Earth and Beside Great Waters: Poems from the Highlands and Islands and wrote the introduction to Sacramental Acts: The Love Poems of Kenneth Rexroth by Sam Hamill. Together with her colleague, Angela Vlaicu, she wrote many reviews in Science Fiction, including “Revisioning Woman in America: A Study of Louise Erdich’s Novel The Antelope Wife”. She also had other writing projects in the making, including a children’s story. Elaine loved the Oregon coast and Cascades Mountains. She was a deep thinker; she was vivacious and very outgoing, made friends easily, and enjoyed discussions on a wide array of topics. She loved adventure and traveling, water sports, choral concerts, plays, creative writing events, spending time with her friends, and her dog, Katie. She will be deeply missed by all who loved her and had the honor of her friendship. Funeral services will be held at St. Demetrius Orthodox Church (3043 Seymour Rd. Jackson) Tuesday, March 26, 2019 at 11:00 A.M. Burial Orthodox Monastery Cemetery. Visitation Monday 3-5 P.M. at the church and Tuesday 10:00 A.M. until service time. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Demetrius Orthodox Church-Elaine Kleiner Memorial Fund.
